Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, the French Riviera, is located in the south-east of France and is popular with the rich and famous, who come to sunbathe on the beaches in the summer and ski in the Alps in the winter. It borders Italy to the east and contains the principality of Monaco. To the north and east is the Alps, the Rhône river is to the west and it has 150 miles of Mediterranean coastline to the south. Marseille is the largest city in Provence, and is the capital of the region. The climate is typically Mediterranean, warm and dry with 300 sunny days every year. The Mistral - a strong, cold wind from the north blows through the region in the winter and spring.
