15th century Wealden barn for sale, currently situated in Ashurst Wood
A dismantled three bay timber barn together with oak battens, cladding, and tiles to be removed from current site near East Grinstead, West Sussex
FOR SALE - OAK BARN FRAME WITH CLADDING AND HANDMADE TILES
A late Medieval Wealden barn, dating from c. 1485, offering a fantastic project for someone with a plot of land. This traditional three bay threshing barn is approximately 31ft x 20ft (9.4m x 6.1m) and would be perfect for an extension, a free-standing cottage or garden building.
Currently dismantled and in ‘kit form’, the timbers have been comprehensively surveyed and catalogued by Joe Thompson, one of the leading experts in timber-framed buildings in the country. Over 85 timbers have been restored by expert carpenters, with 30 remaining to be restored or replaced.
The appropriate oak cladding and oak battens have been milled, and are currently ‘in stick’ air drying. Cladding has been commissioned in the form of 9¾” by 1″ oak boards butt jointed, champfered to encourage rain water to shed from the join, on the advice of Joe Thompson.
The handmade tiles that are included are in keeping with the age and style of the barn.
The barn dates from the late 15th century and probably stood near Cowfold in Sussex until the late 20th century. It was dismantled about 40 years ago and stored with the intention of reassembling it in a new location. Now no longer required, it offers a unique and extremely rare opportunity to acquire a historical building.
